Area information :
Today, Miseno is an important seaside resort, with its suggestive promontory, adjoining port and graceful, sparsely-populated town. Since 1919, it has been part of the commune of Bacoli, and its headland is the Northern border of the Gulf of Naples. Miseno is part of the most fascinating patrimony of the world: the submerged city of the Phlegraean Fields, capital of the underwater archaeology.
Homeric legend has it that the aerial promontory was the burial place of one of Ulisses’ companions, whom Virgil transformed into Aeneas’s trumpeter, Misenus. The port of Miseno’s importance was more firmly established when Augustus made it the Tyrrhenian naval base. Among the prefects of the Misenian Fleet were Tiberius Claudius Anicetus, who murdered Agrippina by Nero’s order, and Pliny the Elder, who perished in the eruption of Vesuvius.
The whole promontory and the surrounding hills of Bacoli were covered with Roman villas, of which the most sumptuous was Marius’ villa, later the property of Lucullus. The emperor Tiberius died there in A.D. 37.
